Social Networking and Security. . . or Lack of When Promoting Your Brand

thumb print of an unique individual
As we slowly approach the 21st century, our advanced technology becomes even more advanced. One obvious invention that many people all over the world use almost everyday is the Internet. The Internet has changed how we live our lives. We are able to message people all over the world, view information with just a click, and even start a digital life. We can start a new profile which provides information about who and what we are, also known as a brand. A brand is the "name, term, design, symbol, or any other feature that identifies one seller's product distinct from those of other sellers." As our daily lives slowly become digital, we have to promote our brand and also be aware of how others view our brand.

There are many social networking sites that allow us to create an account and be involved in the website's community. Some commonly used websites include Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. With Facebook, we can create public and private profiles for certain audiences to view. The photos and updates we post on our profiles show the audience what kind of brand we have. If our brand gets popular enough, then it will spread through the Internet and many people will know what brand we are. Also, we can get an idea of what people think about our brand with available alert websites such as Google Alerts and Hootsuite.

The security of our profile brands are great, since we can always limit what others can see. Even though some keywords and posts can be monitored, we can see how others view us and build on that if there are any criticisms.

When starting a brand, social networking is a great tool spread the word around.

  1. Nice post on security while promoting a brand. I notice that you gave the definition of a brand. You probably got that from somewhere, and I think the teacher wants us to link to sources when we do that. I made the same mistake several times while writing my post on Social Networking and Security. It’s pretty easy to do, just highlight “brand” in the editor and click link at the top. I think you did a great job and hope you fix that minor mistake soon. Also, the theme you chose is gorgeous!

  2. Hi Ryan! I agree with what Ian said. And, I am glad that you corrected your mistake. You have nicely stated what social networking is and how we can use it to promote our brands. Further, you also briefly started on social networking security. This blog gives a general idea of social networking and its importance. However, I think you could write more on social networking topic by being little more specific. For example, you could write more about specific social networking site like Facebook and/or you could talk about current issues faced by social networking websites.
Overall, you did a nice job and I enjoyed reading this blog.

  3. This is a great overview over social networking when promoting your brand. I like your introduction because it does a great job of introducing social networking and putting it in context. It is true that what we can share information over the internet with a huge and broad audience all over the world. However, this also means that we have to be careful about what we post online as it is a reflection of our values, and our ideas. As technology advances, we put more and more of ourselves online. I agree that social networking sites are a great way of promoting a positive brand. In fact, different kinds of social networking sites can serve different purposes. We can publish information about companies online on Facebook and interact with customers on Twitter. I would love to learn more about the cons and dangers of social networking sites in terms of security. You can give specific examples such as how Facebook allows you to determine the scope of visibility of posts and comments on their page. You can write about whether you believe these features are helpful or harmful. This will help strengthen your blog post since currently the introduction is the biggest part. You can also discuss how to effectively use social networking to spread the word faster. For example, tweeting about promotions or events may be a better way than posting a comment on YouTube. Overall, this is a great post on social networking and the part it plays in branding.
